Expertise France.

PRESS RELEASE · FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE · 30 September 2026
Estonian technology programme for girls opens in Zhytomyr — 180 places
This autumn a new opportunity opens for girls aged 8–11 in Zhytomyr: free clubs in robotics, electronics and hands-on engineering, run under the HK Unicorn Squad programme. The Estonian programme has run since 2018 and now comes to Ukraine for the first time.
15 groups open in 13 education institutions in Zhytomyr, reaching 180 girls in total. The sessions are led by 15 local instructors trained in Tallinn. Participation is free of charge.
The format is deliberately unlike a school lesson. Each session arrives as a sealed box: motors, boards, wires, tools and instructions. The instructor does not demonstrate the answer — she opens the box with the girls and finds out alongside them. The girls work in pairs and small teams, building things that move, light up or make a sound. There are no grades and no tests. The point is not only to learn how something works, but to enjoy finding out — experimenting, being surprised, getting things wrong.

Why eight to eleven, and why girls only
The programme is built on applied research carried out in 2025, which analysed 81 selected studies drawn from 22 research reviews and conducted 31 interviews with girls, parents and instructors. Its central finding concerns timing: interest in science and technology has to be built before the age of eleven. After that, once ideas about a future profession have begun to form, it becomes very hard to create.
The second reason is the composition of the group. In mixed groups boys tend to take the tools and girls take the notes. In a girls-only group every girl has more room to take part actively, to experiment and to work with the equipment.
Instructors trained in Estonia
In August 2026, 15 instructors from Zhytomyr completed a five-day training in Tallinn, building the things they will later build with the girls. They are teachers and club leaders from local schools and extracurricular centres. No engineering degree is required — in Estonia, most of the instructors are parents.
The learning kits have already been delivered to Ukraine: twenty sessions, twenty boxes per group. When the pilot ends, all equipment stays in Ukraine so the partner institutions can continue running the clubs themselves.
How to register
Registration: from 1 to 5 October 2026.
Each group has its own day, time and registration form, with twelve places per group. If a group receives more registrations than it has places, the Estonian team draws the places by lot — every registration submitted before the deadline has the same chance, and registering earlier gives no advantage. Everyone who does not get a place goes on the waiting list.
All locations, schedules and registration forms are in the information sheet attached to this press release.
